ABSTRACT

Abstract. Objective. This study characterized the electroencephalographic correlation (rEEG) between prefrontal and parietalcortices in young men while solving logical-mathematical problems after 18 sessions of cognitive training. Method. Two training groups were formed: one trained with gradually increased complexity (CT), the other with no increase in complexity (ST). Results. CT had a greater number of correct responses in the post-training evaluation than ST and showed a higher correlation between the left frontopolar-parietal cortices in almost all EEG bands, and between the dorsolateral-parietal cortices in the alpha1 band while solving math problems post-training. Results suggest that major functional synchronization between the left prefrontal and parietal cortices plays an important role in improving mathematical problem-solving after cognitive training.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objectives. To describe the characteristics of the population with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3 and 4, to determine the factors associated with CKD progression and admission to renal replacement therapy (RRT), as well as renal survival. Materials and methods. Longitudinal retrospective study of patients referred between January 2012 and December 2015 to the Renal Health Unit of the Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins (HNERM), who were evaluated and followed by a multidisciplinary team. The clinical and laboratory data for each query were recorded in a software created specifically for the program. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the factors associated with the progression of CKD, a Cox regression model to predict the risk of entering RRT and the Kaplan-Meier method for renal survival analysis. Results. We assessed 1248 patients in stage 3A: 248 (20%), stage 3B: 548 (44%) and stage 4: 452 (36%). 352 (28%) progressed, being proteinuria the most important progression factor (OR: 3.2; CI 95%: 2,2-4.6). Proteinuria increases the risk of admission to RRT in four times and having a glomerular filtration rate < 30% in 3.6 times. Median follow-up was 12 months (RIC 5-27 months). 92 patients (7%) required to initiate RRT. Renal survival at 12 months of follow-up was 96% and at 24 months was 90%. Conclusions. Our study shows that in a specialized center a significant proportion of patients with CKD does not progress in their disease and that the factor that is most associated with progression of disease and at the onset of RRT is proteinuria.

ABSTRACT

Background Millepora alcicornis is a branching hydrocoral common throughout the Caribbean Sea. Like other members of this genus, this species is capable of inducing skin eruptions and blisters with severe pain after contact. In the present study, we investigated the toxicity of theM. alcicornis aqueous extract on several animal models. Considering that some cnidarian hemolysins have been associated to local tissue damage, since they also induce lysis of other cell types, we also made a partial characterization of the hemolytic activity of M. alcicornis aqueous extract. This information is important for understanding the defense mechanisms of the fire corals. Methods The effects of pH, temperature, and some divalent cations on the hemolytic activity of the extract were assayed, followed by a zymogram analysis to detect the cytolysins and determine their approximate molecular weight. The toxicity of the aqueous extract was assayed in mice, by intravenous administration, and histopathological changes on several tissues were analyzed by light microscopy. The toxicity of the extract was also tested inArtemia salina nauplii, and the damages caused on the crustaceans were analyzed by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Results The hemolytic activity of the hydrocoral extract was enhanced in the presence of Ca 2+ (2 mM), Mg 2+ (6 mM), and Ba2+ (0.1 mM); however, it was reduced in the presence of Cu2+(0.1 mM), Zn 2+ (6 mM), and EDTA (0.34 mM). Differences in the pH did not affect the hemolytic activity, but it was temperature-sensitive, since preincubation at 50 °C sharply reduced hemolysis. The zymogram showed the presence of two types of hemolysins: ~ 2830 kDa proteins with phospholipase A 2 activity and ~ 200 kDa proteins that do not elicit enzymatic activity. The aqueous extract of this cnidarian was lethal to mice (LD 50 = 17 g protein/g), and induced kidney, liver, and lung damages. Under denaturing conditions, the aqueous extract completely lost its toxic and hemolytic activities. Conclusions The results showed that the M. alcicornis aqueous extract contains two types of thermolabile hemolysins: proteins of approximately 2830 kDa with PLA 2 activity, while the others are larger proteins of approximately 200 kDa, which do not possess PLA 2activity. Those thermolabile cytolysins, which are stable to pH changes and whose activity is calcium dependent, are capable of inducing damage in lung, kidney and liver tissues, resulting in a slow death of mice. M. alcicorniscytolysins also provoke tissue dissociation inArtemia salina nauplii that might be attributed to pore forming mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the phenomenon of sleep and dreams has fascinated humans always. However, the scientific study of sleep is relatively recent. In 1953, Aserinsky and Kleitman found that slow wave sleep (SWS) was periodically interrupted by episodes of rapid EEG activity, which are accompanied by rapid eye movements (REMs), and named this sleep phase as REM sleep. Subsequently, in 1957, Dement and Kleitman discovered that these rapid eye movements coincided with the appearance of dreams. By using animal experimental models, the subcortical mechanisms underlying REM sleep have been studied, and it has been demonstrated that this activity depends on the serotonergic activity from wakefulness, which promotes the formation of peptides that trigger certain structures of the brainstem, where cholinergic mechanisms of REM sleep are integrated. In turn, on the pontine region monophasic phasic potentials (300-400 uV) are generated that can also be recorded on the lateral geniculate body and in the occipital cortex; hence the name of ponto-geniculo-occipital waves (PGO). These potentials spread to the oculomotor system to provoke the REMs of REM sleep and possibly give rise to visual hallucinatory phenomena. Furthermore, it has been shown that certain limbic structures related to emotion and memory are activated by these potentials. This suggests that PGO waves generate mnemonic and emotional components of dreams. Several aspects of the functions of these PGO waves remains to be determined, but knowledge about the origin of brain phenomena that generate dreams has had a breakthrough from its study. In the present work we review the literature concerning the work done over PGO waves and its contribution to the knowledge of the origin and functions of dreams.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the 5 mg. melatonin effects on the sleep macro-architecture in eight patients with middle to moderate Alzheimer's disease (DTA). Using the polysomnography technique (PSG), we made a simple-blind, non-randomized, controlled with placebo study. The PSG was carried out according to the following order: night 1: placebo administration; night 2 and 3: continues melatonin administration. In the first night with melatonin treatment, the sleep latency to the first episode of Stage 2, Delta and REM sleep, was significantly diminished as compared with placebo (≤.05). No significant difference in total time of each sleep stage and sleep efficiency was observed. Nevertheless, a tendency to diminish the total time of nocturnal wake and increase of the total sleep time in the second night with melatonin treatment was observed. We conclude that melatonin can improve sleep in patients with middle to moderate DTA.

ABSTRACT

Crosses were made between four blast resistant and six rice varieties of good agronomic performance, at the Los Palacios Rice Research Station of the National Agricultural Sciences Institute of Cuba (INCA) and the anthers from F2 plants were in vitro culture using three liquid media: N6-1, N6m, and NL, for callus formation and after plants regenerations using MS medium. The first two generations of breeding lines were evaluated for agronomic characters and the second generations, also, for Blast resistant. The lines that combined resistance to Blast and good agronomic performance were evaluated under high pressure of natural Blast infection conditions. The success rate of anther culture was highly dependent on the genotype and culture media used. NL medium led to the highest callus formation values. In the process, new blast resistant and high yielding genotypes were obtained.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive styles are a stable attitudes, preferences, or habitual strategies that determine individuals' modes of perceiving, remembering, thinking, and problem solving. The impulsivity-reflectivity cognitive style refers preference for making responses quickly versus pausing to decrease the number of errors in problem-solving situations. Relationships between impulsivity-reflectivity and intelligence are still not clear. The aim of this project was to know what impulsivity-reflectivity dimension can be considered more common in gifted children assessed by a standard IQ test. 50 primary and secondary school children were assessed with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-r), the Renzulli Scale for Rating Behavioural Characteristics of Talented and Gifted Students, and the Matching Familiar Figures Test. Results suggest high IQ students (over 130 in WISC-r) were more likely to show a reflectivity cognitive style.

ABSTRACT

Crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) is the most abundant and best studied member of the CHH/MIH/GIH neuropeptide hormone family. CHH plays a major role in controlling glucose levels in the hemolymph, and it also has significance in regulating molting, reproduction, and osmoregulation. In contrast, molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) is responsible for maintaining animals in an intermolt stage. In this study, Liv-MIH-1 cDNA, which encodes a mature neuropeptide from the eyestalk of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, was expressed in methylotrophic yeast (Pichia pastoris KM71) under the control of an alcohol oxidase promoter. Recombinant Liv-MIH-1 was secreted into the culture medium using the á-factor prepro-sequence without Glu-Ala repeats. The expected protein, which had an apparent molecular mass of 12.1 kDa, was detected by Tricine-SDS-PAGE analysis and confirmed by Western blot. Pure recombinant Liv-MIH-1 was obtained by affinity chromatography, and N-terminal sequence analysis confirmed expression of the protein. Biological assays for CHH and MIH activity were also performed. Purified recombinant Liv-MIH-1 showed the ability to elevate the glucose level of hemolymph of L. vannamei, but molting was unaffected. Since these results are in agreement with the high structural and phylogenetic similarity that has been observed between Liv-MIH-1 and other CHH neuropeptides we propose to rename the protein Liv-CHH-SG1.

ABSTRACT
